SAN RAFAEL, CA – Three shoplifting suspects were arrested over the weekend – despite two leading officers on a foot chase – after the San Rafael Police responded to a possible theft-in-progress call at Home Depot, according to authorities.

Shortly after noon on Sunday, police were notified by the retailer that individuals appeared to be preparing to steal a shopping cart loaded with tools. The suspects left the store, put the tools in their car and were about to drive off when stopped by an officer, the agency said.

The driver remained in the vehicle, while two accomplices fled, police said. With assistance from the Marin County Sheriff's Office, law enforcement spotted the pair behind a BMW dealership, however, the suspects split up and again took off running before being apprehended, police said.

One suspect, who made an ill-fated wardrobe choice that day, was found hiding in the pampas grass in the marsh. "His bright blue sweatshirt helped to give away his hiding spot," police said.

Two of the suspects, who were juveniles, were on probation from another county. The third, an adult, was booked at the Marin County Jail.
