Last week was the annual bye week for all 3 teams, as everyone got a chance to rest up.  The boys are back in action this Saturday in the first of 3 straight home games to close the season.  In the standings, Varsity remains tied with Marin Catholic at an undefeated 4-0 league record (5-1 overall).  The JV’s remained undefeated on the entire season at 6-0, while the frosh boys currently stand at 4-3.  This Saturday the boys will host Terra Linda; Frosh at 9:30, JV 11:30 and Varsity at 2:00.

Madi Brown and Allison Nieh competed at the NCS D2 Golf Championships on Monday.  Fresh off career low rounds in the MCAL Championships, the girls once again came through with outstanding rounds of 86 and 87.  That placed both girls in the top 8 which moves them onto the NCS Tournament of Champions.  The girls will next play Monday, October 28 at Peacock Gap GC in San Rafael.

Volleyball

Varsity- The varsity girls had a tough week but battled hard in their quest for a berth in the MCAL Playoffs.  On Wednesday, the girls played before a boisterous crowd in the crosstown rival game against Novato.  With both teams tied for the last playoff spot coming in, the two teams certainly left everything out on the court.  Novato jumped to a easy first set win 25-18.  The Mustangs roared back in the second set winning 25-20 after trailing 17-12.  The third set saw Novato once again control the front of the net racking up kills to win another 25-18 set.  Everything seemed to point to a fifth and deciding set, as the Mustangs jumped ahead 15-9.  Novato responded though to take a 17-16 lead.  From that point on, the two teams traded points till the very end with Novato prevailing 25-23.  Allie Kradepohl led the Mustangs in kills, while Rebecca O’Brien had a big game in blocks.  Sarah and Sam Tong had an outstanding night passing to setup the Mustang attack. Some key plays down the stretch were made by freshmen Emily Baxter and Alex Berlin.

On Friday, the girls ran into undefeated Redwood.  After losing the first set, the girls came back with an inspired effort to take the second set which is the only set Redwood has lost in league this season.  The Giants regrouped and stormed back with 2 solid sets for the win.

This will be a big week ahead for the girls with matches against San Rafael and Drake.  A 2-0 week will be needed to keep their playoff hopes alive.

JV –  JV volleyball went 1-1 last week. On Wednesday they took down Novato sweeping them in 2 sets. The entire team had an outstanding night. Hannah Smith and Molly Lucey led the team in service aces. Rebecca Simonetti and Molly Dwyer each had a solo block as well as a few block assists. Elise Styles produced beautiful sets and made smart decisions in both sets to help us win the match.  On Friday the girls lost to Redwood in two sets.

Frosh- The SM Frosh split their two matches last week.  Against Novato, they overcame nerves in the first set to win 25-23 then rolled the Hornets in set two winning 25-10.  The entire team played well and Jessica Cyr led the girls with great passing, while Ellie Tippett and Sierra Ashley combined for 19 assists.

The Redwood match was a tough one for the girls losing 9-25 and 16-25.  Sierra Ashley scored four impressive points with setter dumps and Katie Quinn served and attacked well.  Athziry Barrera also played solidly in the back row for the Mustang Frosh.

Water Polo – Boys

Varsity-  The varsity boys went 2-0 on the week.  They started on Tuesday defeating Terra Linda 13-7.  Ryan Campbell led the way with 7 goals, followed by Sebastian Bauer and Jimmy Fewell with 2 each.  Jack Hance and Louie Campbell added 1 each.  Campbell also had 7 assists on the night.  On defense, Fewell had 7 steals while Dan Hardman added 2.  Goalie Ben Rosenbaum had a great game with 10 blocks.

Then on Thursday, the boys came back and beat Marin Academy 14-6.  Louie Campbell had another big game scoring 5 goals.  Fewell and Bauer both had 2 each, while Will Hardman, Dan Hardman, Zach Martin, Vince Damazyn, and Jack Hance each chipped in 1.  Tyler Nam, Will, Daniel, Louie had 2 assists each.  Goalie Ben had another good game with 7 blocks.  The boys currently are sitting in 4th place heading into the final 3 games of MCAL play.

JV-  The JV’s defeated Marin Academy 9-7 in an overtime thriller.  Behind with seconds to go, Matt Iacovelli rushed the goalie and with the help of Jeremy Nuyens and Dawsen Bacho stole the ball. Bacho scored on the possession putting the game into overtime.  Overtime was tight until the end when San Marin pulled ahead by 2 for the win.   Leading the offense were Ty Callihan, Jordan Kulp, and Dawsen Bacho who scored 2 goals each. Ronan Shaffer, Jeremy Nuyens, and Justin Thompson each added another.  Those goals were setup by assists from Archer Leida, Sawyer Ikeda, Matt, Peter, and Nuyens.  On defense, Callihan and Nuyens had 3 steals eacc, while Jacob Fullman, Peter Hunt, and Bacho stole 2.  Goalie Wyatt Tooley had another outstanding game, firing up his team and recording 7 blocks.

Water Polo – Girls

The varsity girls lost a close game with Marin Academy 7-5.  They remain in 4th place with an overall record of 11-5.  No other information provided.

Tennis

This week we turned in two very good performances as the girls officially clinched a spot in the MCAL Team Tennis Playoffs.   A win over Novato 7-2 was followed by a 6-3 win over Drake.

·         Daria Hoang continued to prove why she is one of the best in the league, as she cruised past a very tough opponent in her Novato match 6-2, 6,2.  Against Drake, she easily dispatched her opponent winning 6-0, 6-1,  and now is 10-2 on the season.

·         Hannah Gelleri came back to beat an opponent she lost to earlier in the season with an impressive 6-2, 6-3 match against Novato.  Against Drake, she dominated winning 6-0, 6,0 and moves to 8-4 on the season.

·         Avery Abel went 1-1 on the week beating her Novato opponent 6-4, 6-4.

·         Christine Coll moved her record to 9-3 on the season as she beat her Novato opponent but fell to Drake.

·         Maddy Gelleri had fought hard in just falling to Novato, but bounced back with a strong win against Drake.

·         In doubles, Angela Ding and Miranda Andrade had a nice 2-0 week with a hard fought win over Novato and an easy win over Drake.

·         Twin sisters, Ananya Somasekar and Amritha Somasekar, had a great week with a win over Novato 6-4, 6-4 and a 6-0, 6-0 win at Drake.

Cross Country

I was a big week of competition for the cross country team.  They started off with a fun run, Strides for Life, raising awareness for colon cancer.  This is a four mile race with over 100 competitors.  Connor Flechsig took 2nd, Ivan Chavez 3rd and Owen Cao 9th.

Last Thursday SM had a home meet on the newly improved course at O'Hair Park.  In the meet contested against Drake and Redwood, every single runner post a new personal record on the 3 mile course.

Honorable mentions:

·         10th Connor Flechsig 18:28

·         11th Ivan Chavez 18:32

·         18th Kyle Welch 19:24

·         19th Nico Panela 19:28

·         8th Michelle Bollinger 21:44

·         23rd Brittany Panela 24:00

·         Jenna Tooley 24:40

·         Marissa Caldwell 24:42.

Then over the weekend the team went up to Ukiah for an Invitational where again San Marin brought home the hardware with Connor Flechsig placing an impressive 8th Varsity Boys 18:09 and Michelle Bollinger 5th Varsity Girls 22:28.
