The Mustangs improved to 2-0 in MCAL play and 4-1 overall with a 49-19 win over Tamalpais. The first half saw each team go back and forth at each other for dueling scores. QB Manny Wilkins got the offense going quick with a 15 yard TD run on the opening drive after LB Grant Shepardson’s INT. Tam answered though with RB Aseal Birir who scored 2 first half TDs and had 123 yards on the ground. The teams kept trading scores as Wilkins ran in another from 18 yards and Birir answered with a 48 yard score. Tied at 14-14 in the 2nd quarter, Wilkins found WR Vince Cerruti for a 31 yard TD, but Tam would answer again with another score on the ground. Finally the Mustangs took the upper hand going into half as Wilkins found WR Isaac Leon for an 11 yard TD to put the Mustangs up 28-19 at the half.
The second half was dominated by the Mustangs whose defense shut down the Tam offense who never scored again. The half was dominated by RB Kyle Chernoff who led all rushers with 183 yards on the ground and 2 TDs. Wilkins had another dominating performance accounting for 5 TDs, 3 in the air and 2 on the ground. The defense was led by DE Damon Moore who had a couple sacks on the day.
The 1st place Mustangs face their crosstown rival this week as they head over to Novato for the City Championship. Kickoff is set for 2 PM at Novato in what should be a great contest.
In honor of the game, Novato eatery Italian Delight is having a Dine and Donate contest on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Just put your money for the tab in either the San Marin or Novato jar and the team who collects the most money will win 10% of the proceeds.
