San Marin Sports Update September 30-October 5

The City Championship Football Game has come and passed as the Mustangs brought back the trophy to San Marin this year.  Water polo, tennis and volleyball all continue their fight to clinch a MCAL playoff spot with some big games on the docket.  Girl’s golf continues one their best seasons in school history as they wrap up MCAL play this week. 

Varsity Football

The Mustangs (5-1) scored on their first possession Saturday at Novato and never looked back en route to a 42-17 win in the City Championship Football Game.  On the opening drive, the Mustangs went 80 yards in 6 plays capped by a Kyle Chernoff 18 yard TD run.  Chernoff had a huge day on the ground totaling 192 yards and 4 TDs.  The offensive line had a huge day opening holes for Chernoff, led by Jose Ochoa, Lucas Hassett, Jake Leonard, Connor Kristofors and Chris Nilsen.  Manny Wilkins had another big day through the air as he completed 19 passes for 224 yards and a 10 yard TD to Vince Cerruti which put the Mustangs up 14-3 at the end of the 1st quarter.  The defense held Novato in check most of the game as Damon Moore, Jackson Monestime, and Kristian Seyler helped keep pressure on the Novato attack all day.  The game blew open in the 3rd quarter when Chernoff had his final 2 TDs to put the game out of reach as the Mustangs led 42-10 after 3 quarters. 

The Mustangs stay undefeated in MCAL play along with Marin Catholic.  This week the Mustangs travel to San Rafael to take on the Bulldogs under the lights on Friday night at 7 PM.

Junior Varsity Football

The JV moved to 6-0 on the season with a 28-0 win over Novato. 

The defense was stifling again, as they held Novato scoreless and didn’t even give up a first down until the 3rd quarter.  The defensive effort was anchored by Cole Eyler, Adrian D'Arrigo, Sam Leonard, Dante Restivo, Nathan Duft, Weston Dunn,  Nick Nazarian, John Chiarenza, Josh Garcia and Chance Cail.  

The offense was led by QB Collin Moore who had 2 TD passes to Sam Weber and Dante Restivo.  RB Jeremiah Watts had a great day on the ground  scoring 2 TDs.  On special teams, Ryan Uluiakepa blocked 2 punts to setup TDs.

Next up, the Mustangs take on Tamalpais on Satuday at 11 AM, as San Rafael does not have a JV team this year.  This will count as a non-league game as the Mustangs beat Tam earlier this year in league play. 

Frosh Football

The frosh football team (3-3) lost a heartbreaker to Novato Saturday 12-0.  In a great battle, the Mustangs came up short on back to back drives late in the game to potentially take the lead as the Hornets led 6-0.  On a 4th down play from the 5, QB Rafael Romero’s pass was tipped and taken back for a game clinching INT TD.  Romero had a great game finding WR Gavin Graybeal 5 times on the day for some big plays.  RB Will Batres and Mitchell Crowe had good days running the ball to keep the Mustang offense moving.  The defense was solid all day with some outstanding tackles by Matt Lawson and Leonardo Madrigal.  The frosh will travel to San Rafael Friday for a 4:30 kickoff. 

Volleyball

Varsity- The Varsity squad went 1-1 this past week in league play.  On Wednesday they won a thrilling, come from behind 5 set match against Justin Siena.  After winning the first set, the Mustangs fell just short in the  next two.  With their backs against the wall, they came out and dominated the 4th set winning 25-17.  Two long serving runs in the 5th set by Abby smith and Sam Tong sealed a win.  Allie Kradepohl had 21 kills while Emily Sundborg added 14.

Then on Friday the Mustangs came up short against a solid Terra Linda squad.   After losing the first set, the Mustangs came out strong in the 2nd with a 10-10 tie before the Trojans went on a big 7-0 run and closed out set two. The same occurred at 9-10 in set three and it looked like the Trojans were going to cruise to an easy sweep.  Freshman Emily Baxter went on a 7-0 serving run (3 aces) to tighten the score to 21-22 late in the set.  With serve down 22-24, Sam Tong and the Mustangs defense rallied to save another match point closing the score 23-24. This forced the Trojans to take a timeout. On the following serve Sam served a tough float to the  called zone, but the Trojans outside hitter managed to "tool" a hit off the outstretched San Marin block to take the set and win the match 25-23.

JV – Over the past 2 weeks, JV volleyball has had some good results.  It started with a solid win over Drake.  Outside hitter Molly Dwyer had 7 kills against the Pirates. Rebecca Simonetti had a great night with 5 aces, 7 digs, and 2 stuff blocks.  The next night the girls fell to Marin Catholic.  Hannah Smith and Molly Lucey had a great defensive night with 5 digs each to keep rallies going. 

Last weekend, the girls attended the Sonoma Valley High JV Tournament where they went 2-1 and took second in our pool. They defeated Vintage High 2-1, Petaluma 2-0, and lost to Terra Linda in a very close match. Sydney Wheaton had an outstanding day defensively and the team wouldn't have thrived without the fantastic sets from Elise Styles.

This past week we played Justin Siena and Terra Linda. Unfortunately we lost both games. Elise Styles had a great game against TL, as Rebecca Simonetti had 4 aces.

Frosh- The Mustang frosh VB squad played well this week and continue improve but lost two close matches to Justin Siena and Terra Linda, both in three sets.  In the Justin match, Sierra Ashley came up with some huge kills at critical moments and also set well.  Amanda Solar had five kills off the bench to solidify the win in set two.   In the TL match, the girls passed and served well as a unit and middle blockers Sydney Cooke and Katie Quinn had nine kills combined.  Ellie Tippett played a great game all around.

Water Polo – Boys

Varsity-  Last week for the first time in years the boys beat Marin Catholic 21-4.  Almost every player got into the scoring column led by Ryan and Louie Campbell with 4 each. Daniel Hardman added 3, Jimmy Fewell and Jack Hance  2, Will Hardman normally working as backup goalie had a single goal along with Tyler Nam, Sebastian Bauer, Zach Martin, Henry Jarjoura, and Vince Damazyn.  Ben Rosenbaum blocked 6 shots and only allowed 2 scores. 

The boys closed the week with a solid 18-8 win over Bishop O’Dowd.  The boys counter-attack was clicking like never before, and they were moving the ball well.  Ryan Campbell had an outstanding game with 7 goals and 4 steals.  Louis Campbell played another around great game with 5 goals, 3 assist, and 2 steals along with some amazing highlight reel moves and shots.  Once again Jimmie Fewell was a key figure in defending the O’Dowd’s "hole-man" and also contributed statistics with 1 goal, 4 assists and 3 steals.  Daniel Hardman led the counter-attack and notched 2 goals while Sebastian Bauer, Jack Hance, and Zach Martin also notched goals. 

 JV-  This weekend the JVs played 6 games in one afternoon between two JV squads.  Each team went 1-2 but had close matches on the losses.  Jordan Kulp scored 8 goals followed by Dawsen Bacho (4), Ty Callihan (3) and Jack Duffin (3).  Jeremy Nuyens had 5 assists followed by Jordan Kulp with 2.  Wyatt Tooley 15 blocks including penaly shot and ejection blocks.  Dawsen Bacho had a whopping 9 steals followed closely by Jack Duffin with 7, Matt Iacovelli with 6, and Billy Ament with 4.  Goals were also scored by Justin Thompson, Austin Thomas, Colton Freemantle, Sawyer Ikeda, Peter Hunt, Ronan Shaffer (who also put a lot of time in the goalie position), Zach Roesler, and Andrew Uyesugi.  Ronan also notched 3 assists.

Water Polo – Girls

San Marin girls water polo (now 6-3, 2-1) started the first of 6 games they will play in the next 5 days with a win over Bishop O'Dowd.  O’Dowd, who always fields stellar teams, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter.  Strong hole play and communication among drivers created a difficult 5-2 margin at the half but San Marin clamped down on defense and only allowed 1 goal in the 2nd half.  Led by Patty Dougherty (5 steals 3 goals) the Mustang defense thwarted every offensive effort the Dragons tried to execute.  There were 5 other Mustangs who recorded 2 or more saves.  Outstanding performers for San Marin: Jessica Iacovelli (2 goals, 2 steals), Tanner Rhoades (3 goals, 2 steals), Sophie Metzger (1 goal, 3 steals).

Soccer

The boys played a strong half against Terra Linda, who is one of the top teams in MCAL, shutting them out in the second half. Tre Diaz led the defense in stopping numerous attacks from TL. Patrick Barrier came up big as always in goal. The whole team played well and started to show some promise for games ahead. This week the boys face Redwood and Tam, the other team in the top three of the standings.  The boys will look to replicate their defensive effort from the Terra Linda game to be successful.

Tennis

The Mustangs travelled to Napa for a match with Justin Siena on Tuesday.  Maddy Gelleri started us off with a 6-0, 6-0 win. She was in total control from beginning to end. Next the twin combo of Ananya and Amritha Somasekar won their first set easily, and then worked hard to close out the victory 6-4 in the second set. Christine Coll dominated her opponent 6-3, 6-2. Leading the match 3-0, Jesse Gasca and Lucie Acker-Hitta had a terrific match but just came up short 6-2, 6-2. Julia Fager, after losing the first set, came back to dominate the second 6-0.  She lost a thrilling tiebreaker for the third set. Avery Abel played perhaps her strongest match of the year winning 6-2, 6-4. Hannah Gelleri was on her game and won easily to clinch the Mustang victory. Angela Ding and Miranda Andrade were locked in a seesaw battle. They squeaked out the first set 7-6 and were able to win the second 7-5.  Then in perhaps the match of the day, #1 Singles Daria Hoang took on one of the best in the league in Olivia Wilson. She dropped the first set but then came roaring back with a 6-2, 10-4 victory.

Thursday against powerhouse Branson, Hannah Gelleri had the only victory winning 6-3, 6-2 against a very solid opponent. Maddy Gelleri and Christine Coll played extremely well. Daria Hoang played top rated player Anastasia Bryan and lost a close battle in what could be a MCAL Championship rematch 6-4, 7-5.

Next up for the Mustangs, Marin Catholic on Tuesday.

Golf

The girl’s golf team heads into the final week of MCAL play currently in 2nd place with a record of 12-2.  They will be competing in the MCAL Golf Championships on Monday, October 15 at Indian Valley Golf Course.  The team is comprised of Alison Nieh, Chloe Cheng, Madi Brown, Gabby Villamonte, Megan Carter and Kim Grandi.
