Marin residents curious about proposed plans to set aside land for high-density affordable housing will have opportunities next week to meet with San Rafael Mayor Gary Phillips and Marin Supervisor Susan Adams to discuss the issue.
Concerns about high-density affordable housing areas have grown amid debate about the draft Plan Bay Area, a regional planning and transportation blueprint that envisions 30-unit-per-acre affordable developments along Marin's Highway 101 corridor as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Critics contend the sites set aside for housing — called "priority development areas" — are inappropriate in part because they will lead to more traffic congestion, a loss of local control, put more stress on community services and result in development incompatible with Marin neighborhoods.
At 7 p.m. Monday, Phillips and San Rafael Councilwoman Kate Colin will hold a meeting at the Marin County Office of Education to hear from the public about San Rafael's two priority development areas, which have already been approved near the Marin Civic Center and in the downtown. Both sites would be near Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit train stations.
