Shuttle Astronaut to Speak on International Space Station and Future of American Space Exploration at Event Honoring Veterans

Come learn from an eminently knowledgeable engineer and NASA astronaut. Oct. 22, 5:30-9:30 p.m. at Marin Catholic HS. Veterans are free.

Building Better Citizens for America (BBCA) will honor the service and sacrifice of Marin County veterans at a fund raiser for Marin’s Air Force JROTC on Thursday, October 22, 2015, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Marin Catholic High School, 675 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, in Kentfield.

Astronaut Scott “Doc” Horowitz, presenting “Serving Our Country, On and Off the Planet,” will share a veteran’s journey serving our country as an Air Force Pilot, Test Pilot, NASA astronaut with over 1300 hours in space, and NASA Associate Administrator. He will bring us along on an actual mission to the International Space Station, and challenge the next generation to regain America’s lead in Space Exploration.

Marin’s Space Station Museum will bring space flight history to life with a traveling display of mission artifacts. And on site will be a high powered telescope to view the moon “up close.”

The Marin Air Force JROTC with the BBCA has bridged the gap between inspiring leaders of tomorrow with accomplished leaders of yesterday. They have hosted and honored over 150 veterans annually. Our veterans will be honored and celebrated for their sacrifices with the help of Marin’s Air Force JROTC students.

The elective AF JROTC class is open to students from Marin and surrounding counties. Unlike ROTC at the college level, the Junior ROTC is not a preparation for military service. It is extremely effective, however, at its mission: to promote citizenship, develop leadership & critical/creative thinking, teach effective communication, improve physical fitness, provide incentive to live drug-free, strengthen positive self-motivation and self esteem, train to work as a team member, and stir interest in science, technology, engineering, and math. The program provides tutoring across the curriculum and emphasizes the importance of furthering one’s education.
