As the New Year approaches we all look back at the “I wish I would have” moments that are now part of the year that is ending. The good thing about 2015 is that is can now segue into 2016. Even so, the year ahead is unclear for most of us.
No one really knows what to expect or how to prepare for what’s ahead. We only know for sure that the year will roll out – all twelve months – as they all do.
What else we know is that we have a great deal of say over how we will approach 2016. We can make it a good year if we prepare ourselves to embrace it and the opportunities it will provide for us to be alive.

So, rather than be disgruntled about the fact that time ages us and that we cannot stop the aging process, let’s seek ways to make the experience something to look forward to.
How? By finding ways to stay young.

I recently read an article by Tather Islam that tooted the secrets to staying young. Hogwash you say? Not necessarily.
According to “Secrets to Staying Young Finally Revealed’ a recent National Institutes of Health study showed that people who stay busy tend to retain a joie d’ vive spirit. This spirit is ’youthful’.
Youthful people remain engaged with the world around them and continue to participate in a variety of social settings, from senior exercise classes which help to keep the body limber to day trip excursions that provide manageable doses of adventure.
While it is true that genetics play a large part in one’s ability to stay healthy, it has been shown time and time again that being healthy is also a state of mind. Engaging with people who are pleasant and/or stimulating to be around can be a contagious elixir. So can efforts to be part of a team of volunteers dedicated to support a cause of particular personal interest.
Economic burdens can weigh heavily upon those on a fixed income and can even limit what options there are to get involved. It’s a good idea to get clear about financial considerations before launching ahead into a game plan of activity. Can’t afford a cruise? Then check out the local community center senior bus trips. In some cases senior centers offer free exercise and art classes as well as game nights.
I’ll be the first to admit that no one has developed a way to turn back the clock. I’m not sure I’d really want to do that. I’d rather forge ahead into the brave new year with interest and excitement about what’s ahead. Keeping my eyes on the road ahead helps me to put distance between here/ and the rear view mirror moments that have already passed.
