Winter Halo In Novato: Photo Of The Day

Patch loves photos! Share your photos with Patch and your work could be featured.

NOVATO, CA — Patch reader Stan Lappen captured these photos of a natural phenomenon known as the moon or winter halo in front of his home in the Hamilton area of Novato.

The ring with an apparent radius of approximately 22 degrees is formed as direct sunlight or moonlight is refracted in millions of hexagonal ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere.
