SONOMA COUNTY, CA -- The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office's bomb squad responded to a report of a possible pipe bomb at a residence near Santa Rosa Junior College Tuesday morning.

Santa Rosa police responded around 10:45 a.m. to a report of a suspicious device at 550 Richmond Dr., north of SRJC, police Sgt. Summer Black said.

The residence had been condemned, and a work crew that was cleaning inside found what looked like a pipe bomb on a pile of garbage, Black said.

The work crew evacuated the residence and called police. Several streets in the area were closed and neighbors were ordered to shelter in place, Black said.

The bomb squad rendered the object safe. It appeared the object contained material that could resemble an explosive, but based on the condition of the residence, the object likely had been inside a very long time, Black said.

Police reopened neighboring streets a short time later and residents were allowed to leave their homes, Black said.
