2 Fires Burn Over 1,100 Acres On Camp Pendleton

See smoke? Two fires on Camp Pendleton are sending plumes of smoke into the sky over northern San Diego County.

CAMP PENDLETON, CA – A pair of fires have burned hundreds of acres on Camp Pendleton, sending plumes of smoke over northern San Diego County but posing no threats to structures, fire officials said.

One blaze, dubbed the "Buffalo Fire," had burned 1,088 acres and was 50 percent contained as of Wednesday morning, according to the Camp Pendleton Fire Department. The fire sparked Monday afternoon in a training area at the Marine Corps base.

The second fire, called the "Llama Fire," had burned 80 acres and was 90 percent contained as of Wednesday morning. The blaze broke out last weekend near the Camp Horno area of the base.

By 4:40 p.m., the Buffalo Fire was 80 percent contained with the same amount of acreage burned. The Llama Fire remained at 90 percent contained with 81 acres burned, according to Camp Pendleton officials.

Firefighters from Camp Pendleton and the Cleveland National Forest have fought the flames on the ground and in the air. Although smoke has been visible across the region, neither fire currently pose a threat to personnel or structures, according to Camp Pendleton officials.
