Brush Fire Burns 80+ Acres At Camp Pendleton

CAMP PENDLETON, CA – Crews have stopped the forward progress of a brush fire that blackened 60 acres overnight in the northwestern reaches of Camp Pendleton, base officials said early Wednesday.

The blaze broke out about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday in the San Mateo helicopter landing zone at the base, said Capt. Brian Villiard, a Camp Pendleton spokesman. Firefighters stopped forward progress of the fire around 4:15 a.m. Wednesday.

By 11:40 a.m., the fire had burned 81 acres and was 80 percent contained, according to base officials.

There are no current reports of threatened structures or injuries, Villiard said.

Residents reported smelling and seeing smoke in Orange County. The city of Laguna Beach and Laguna Beach Police Department advised the public that the smoke residents are smelling is coming from the Camp Pendleton fire, and that there is no threat to the city. The city of Newport Beach, Huntington Beach Fire Department and Orange County Fire Authority relayed similar messages on social media.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
