But first, today's weather:
Mostly sunny and humid. High: 82 Low: 63.
Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- The North County Fire Protection District tweeted Monday about a brush fire burning on Camp Pendleton, "Smoke may be visible but there is no fire threat to our district." The district includes North County San Diego. Residents living near the base were expected to see smoke from the blaze, dubbed the Aliso fire, that was mapped at about 300 acres. The fire was burning in the base's "impact area," according to the district. Several impact areas, which are used for military training exercises, are located on the northeast portion of the base. - Do you know how extreme heat can affect you? Recently, the National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for San Diego County. The warning stated, "Dangerously hot conditions with temperatures up to 100° F," were possible. It cautioned that extreme heat significantly increases the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for people working outdoors or participating in outdoor activities. In San Diego, heat-related illnesses are on the rise as temperatures increase. Dr. James Elia warns in the Times of San Diego, "If a person with heat stroke is left untreated, their organs can go into failure. This can cause death or permanent injury. Call 911 and take them to an emergency room immediately." (Patch)
- Oceanside Theatre's Billie! Backstage with Lady Day offers a poignant look at Billie Holiday's final years. Written and performed by Synthia L. Hardy and a jazz quartet, the show is part documentary, part concert. Portraying Holiday in the mid-1950s, Hardy starts the play by storming up a side aisle from the lobby muttering a stream of obscenities at those who have wronged her. Then she downs two large glasses of vodka before acknowledging the audience. It's a bold beginning for the fascinating play, which Oceanside Theatre Co. opened Friday for a two-weekend run at the Brooks Theater. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
- The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation provided a $250,000 general operating grant to the Armed Services YMCA Camp Pendleton to support programs and services provided to active-duty service members and their families. The Armed Services YMCA Camp Pendleton also offers a variety of events each year to help support military families and single service members. Most programs and events are supported with the help of volunteers. Events include: the annual Father Daughter Dance, Mother Son Dance, Ball Gown Giveaway, Secret Santa/Santa's Workshop and Concrete Beach. (PR Web)
