Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. Camp Pendleton Noise advisory issued for the next two weeks. Oceanside residents may hear booming noises as Camp Pendleton Marines participate in live-fire training Wednesday and Thursday, a Camp Pendleton spokesperson announced. Live-fire training will continue next week from June 12-14. Residents can expect to hear loud ammunition noises anytime between 6 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. as Marines fire high explosive ammunitions into the Whiskey/Zulu impact area, roughly seven miles from Oceanside. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. North Island Credit Union has launched a school backpack drive for San Diego area elementary and middle school students in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego. Through July 23, community members can donate and drop off school backpacks to any branch in San Diego County. Donated backpacks should be new and appropriate for elementary and middle school students. (San Diego Patch)
  3. Up to 20 people were aboard a boat that washed ashore in Oceanside late Sunday. On Wednesday, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection called it a possible smuggling attempt.
Around 15 to 20 people with life jackets on jumped off the boat as it landed near Buccaneer Beach at about 10:45 p.m., Oceanside police said. The group ran up the beach and jumped into at least two vehicles waiting for them. (NBC San Diego)
  4. How much does the US Military spend in California? The DoD spent a reported $61 billion in California in fiscal 2020 — the third-highest share among the 50 states. The U.S. military budget is the largest in the world, and by a wide margin. The Biden administration recently submitted a defense budget of $773 billion for fiscal 2023 – which is more than the combined budgets of the next 10 highest-spending countries combined. (24/7 Wall St.)
  5. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County dropped Tuesday for the 20th consecutive day, decreasing 1.1 cents to $6.20. The average price has dropped 17.3 cents over the past 20 days, including four-tenths of a cent both Sunday and Monday, according to figures from the AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. The streak of decreases follows a run of 19 increases in 20 days totaling 35.5 cents. (Times of San Diego)
