Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. Oceanside residents may hear booming noises as Camp Pendleton Marines conduct live-fire training this week. Base officials announced that a noise advisory was in effect August 14-19. Troops will be firing high explosive munitions in the base's Whiskey/Zulu Impact Area each day from 6 a.m. to midnight, roughly seven miles from Oceanside. Camp Pendleton regularly conducts live munitions training that can be heard across the region. Residents unfamiliar with the noise sometimes mistake it for thunder or sonic booms. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. The Registrar of Voters has mailed over 1.9 million postcards to registered voters in San Diego County listing voting options for the Nov. 8 Statewide General Election. Every active registered voter will automatically receive a ballot in the mail and will have three options for returning that ballot: by mail, to one of the registrar's secure ballot drop box locations or at any vote center. Ballots begin going out in the mail on Oct. 8, giving voters nearly a month to mark their ballot and return it before Election Day. (Press Release Desk)
  3. A monsoon weather pattern for San Diego County was predicted to continue through this week, leading to a daily risk of thunderstorms, mainly during the afternoons over the mountains, the National Weather Service said. Modest drying was expected to lead to fewer thunderstorms early this week, but moisture appears to increase late in the week, the NWS said. High clouds covered some of the high desert Sunday morning, while patchy low clouds appeared at the coast. Seasonally warm mid-summer weather was predicted to prevail, along with elevated humidity. (Patch)
  4. The Oceanside Museum of Art's 'Pop Smoke: A Veteran Art Exhibition' opened this past weekend and runs through Jan. 15, 2023. The exhibition is a survey of veteran artists who utilize bright colors, basic shapes, commonplace images, or repetitive means of production within their art-making practice. The exhibition's title is a military slang term referring to throwing smoke grenades as a means of cover or escape during battle. The term "pop smoke" is also common slang that means "to leave a place." (San Diego Union-Tribune)
  5. Took a break from the news this weekend? Worry not, we've rounded up some of the stories you missed in SoCal on Saturday and Sunday. But before we jump into Southern California's top stories, Golden State residents should know that even though the state is in the midst of a seemingly never-ending megadrought, experts say it may also have to worry about a "mega flood." And experts say it would be unlike anything anyone alive today has ever experienced. A 30-year-old deputy was accused of sexually assaulting two women at Theo Lacy jail, according to multiple reports. (Patch)
