Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. San Diego County Supervisors voted to oppose the placement of sexually violent predators near home-schooling sites. The motion was co-led by supervisor Jim Desmond, who represents Oceanside, and will in effect direct the state to take home-school sites into account, in addition to public and private schools. Desmond said an appeals court recently ruled in favor of treating home schools the same as private and public institutions. "'We want to advocate for this change through the state Legislature as well,' he said." (Patch)
  2. Need some help with that skyrocketing heating bill? SDG&E will offer $1 million in assistance for customers having financial difficulties. The funds won't come from ratepayers but from SDG&E shareholders through the Neighbor-to-Neighbor program. Customers can get up to a $300 one-time grant to cover the cost of their utility bill. A few requirements are needed to qualify for the program. "To apply, customers should call 2-1-1 San Diego or 2-1-1 Orange County, which will direct them to community-based organizations collaborating with SDG&E." (Times of San Diego)
  3. Oceanside surfer Caity Simmers can now add filmmaker to her list of impressive credits. The 17-year-old racked up more than a few surfing championships, including the Super Girl Surf Pro. (Read my exclusive interview with Caity from 2021). While taking a year off from competitive surfing, Caity edited, directed and starred in a 23-minute short film called "Toasted" that has its worldwide premiere today at the Moose Lodge in Oceanside. (Stab Magazine)
  4. Did you know January is National Blood Donor Month? This is partly because it's harder to collect blood in January due to bad weather, the holidays and other factors. To encourage donations, the Red Cross is again teaming up with the NFL. This year all donors are entered to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LVII in Phoenix. The Red Cross has donation sites in cities across North County, including Oceanside. (Coast News)
