The slain Marine's father, Scott Weberpal, of Whitewater, Wisconsin, said he has been "inundated with message requests, friend requests, and media inquiries" but could not respond to all of the messages.
"It's with excruciating sadness and tears in my eyes that I'm writing this," Weberpal wrote on Facebook. "My only son, my own blood, Marine PFC Ethan Andrew Barclay-Weberpal, was killed yesterday morning at Camp Pendleton, CA."
The stabbing was reported about 7:45 a.m. at the infantry-training facility. Details surrounding what led to the stabbing have not been released.
Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the incident.
"There are few details at this time as there is an ongoing investigation," Weberpal wrote.
Barclay-Weberpal enlisted in the Marines in July 2017 and was awarded the National Defense Ribbon.
Weberpal said arrangements for his son have not yet been finalized. He thanked people for the "outpouring of support."
