Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. Today is the final day to cast your ballot in the Gubernatorial Primary Election. Voters can do so at any one of 218 vote centers or 132 official ballot drop box locations around the county. All will be open today from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Any voter who is in line at a vote center or ballot drop box location at 8 p.m. will be allowed to vote. However, no one can join the line after the 8 p.m. deadline. If you're not registered to vote and want to participate in the election, you may visit any vote center to conditionally register and vote provisionally through Election Day. (County of San Diego)

  2. A woman pedestrian was killed in Oceanside on Sunday morning around 8 a.m. after a car drove onto a sidewalk, then fled, according to the Oceanside Police Department. A black Honda SUV was traveling eastbound on Benet Road near the intersection of Leepish Drive while the woman was walking eastbound on the sidewalk, officials said. After hitting the woman, the suspect vehicle then left the scene, making a U-turn westbound on Benet Road. Oceanside Fire Department personnel performed life-saving measures, but the victim died. The name of the deceased woman has not yet been released pending family notification. (NBC7 San Diego)

  3. California's primary races to watch continue to include the 49th District, which includes Oceanside. Democratic Rep. Mike Levin is defending a D+5 seat. The leading GOP contender may be former San Juan Capistrano Mayor Brian Maryott, who Levin defeated by 6 points in the 2020 election. But Maryott must contend with two other noteworthy Republicans: Oceanside City Councilman Christopher Rodriguez, who has raised $1.2 million ($100,000 from his own pocket), and Orange County Supervisor Lisa Bartlett, who has brought in $489,000. (FiveThirtyEight)

  4. California's latest COVID-19 surge has driven cases up in some counties across the nation's most populous state, and called into question whether masking rules should be reinstated indoors. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified 13 counties where community spread was highest. The following counties were included on the watch list. (San Diego Patch)

  5. The trial began on Monday for the fifth sailor charged in the death and alleged cover-up of another sailor. HM2 Edmond Maebane pleaded not guilty inside a Camp Pendleton courtroom to involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment charges. He and four other sailors were accused in connection with the shooting death of HM3 Michael De Leon during a house party on the Twentynine Palms military base in 2019. (ABC 10 News San Diego KGTV)
