First Blue Whale Of The Season: Oceanside Photo Of The Day

Thanks to Oceanside Adventures for today's photos. Patch loves photos! Share your photos with Patch and your work could be featured, too.

OCEANSIDE, CA — Oceanside Adventures got some amazing photos of a Blue Whale off the coast of Oceanside this weekend. Manager, Carla Mitroff shared the experience with the Patch.

"This weekend we saw our first blue whale of the season! The largest animal on the planet! (approx. 80 ft long- our boat is 50ft long for comparison)

Summertime means Blue whales! Only 2% of the world's population get to see one in their lifetime so our passengers were super excited and so were we!

Blue whales are just so amazing to see in person as they are humongous! That tail is as wide as our boat, their spout is about 30ft tall like Old Faithful in Yellowstone and almost twice as long as our boat. Their heart is the size of a VW bug and their tongue the size of an African elephant!"

Oceanside Adventures offers year-round whale and dolphin tours. Gray whales are migrating from December through April. We also see Fin whales and minke whales year-round. In the summertime, we see the humpbacks and blue whales and we have 4 species of dolphins, so there is always something to see no matter what time of the year you go.
