  2. What was happening in California when the United States declared Independence? San Diego, in July 1769, was the first of California’s modern cities to be established when the governor Gaspar de Portola established the Presidio of San Diego and friar Junipero Serra founded the Mission San Diego de Alcala. A year later the second Presidio and the second mission were founded in Monterey in June 1770 by Portola and Serra. Just five days before the United States Declaration of Independence would be signed, a mass was held at la Laguna de los Dolores on June 29, 1776 that would mark the founding of San Francisco. (Fox5 San Diego)
  3. The planned July Fourth fireworks show at Camp Pendleton's Del Mar Beach was canceled, military officials announced. The show was planned for authorized military and their families, but Marine Corps Community Services tweeted last Sunday that "sadly, due to circumstances beyond control," the show had to be canceled. (CBS News 8)
  4. A developer plans to replace the 2.7 acres occupied by the Regal Cinemas complex that opened in 1999 on Mission Avenue in downtown Oceanside. The proposed 75-foot-tall building would have a combination of residences, retail shops and restaurants. The 7-story building would have 321 residential units and three levels of parking, including one level below ground, along with open-air courtyards, a “resort-style pool, spa, lounges and lush gardens,” according to the preliminary application on file at Oceanside City Hall.
