OCEANSIDE, CA – An hour-long pursuit up and down Interstate 5 ended early Monday morning with the arrest of the driver and his female companion at the Oceanside Pier.

Oceanside police say that at around 2:45 a.m., a California Highway Patrol officer spotted a Volkswagen Beetle in north San Diego that had been reported stolen the day before from Oceanside. When CHP tried to pull the driver over, he kept driving north to Oceanside, where he reversed direction to Solana Beach, then headed back north to Oceanside, at some point running over a spike strip.

The car came to a stop shortly before 4 a.m., police said, at the base of the Oceanside Pier.

Authorities have not released the suspects' names. Footage by San Diego News Video shows the driver speaking with reporters while in custody. He said he is 24, from Oceanside and that he plans to marry the female passenger, who was also arrested.

At one point, a reporter asked if the pursuit had been worth it.

"Absolutely," the man replied. "One hundred percent. If a cop had gotten behind me any time of the day, it would've happened the same way."
