Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. One person was killed Monday when an SUV crashed on Interstate 5 in Oceanside near Camp Pendleton. The northbound gray Jeep Cherokee veered off the freeway near Wire Mountain Road about 4:15 p.m., overturned and struck a fence, according to the California Highway Patrol. The fatal wreck forced a closure of two northbound lanes on the freeway in the area, the CHP reported. The mortally injured person's name was not immediately available. (Times of San Diego)
  2. The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce hosted the April Rising Star student recognition program for the 2021/2022 school year at the El Camino Country Club last week. April 2022 Rising Star honorees were: Jasmine Perez (Surfside Educational Academy), Maya Juache (Oceanside High School) Ariyan Perdue (El Camino High School) (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  3. The Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation offers scholarships to graduating high school seniors seeking to further their education in the arts. The deadline is May 9 for Performing Arts: theater, music or dance; Visual Arts: students seeking to further their education in visual arts paintings, sculptures, stained glass, ceramics, fine jewelry, digital media and photography; Filmmaking: students seeking to further their craft in the film industry in documentation or narrative, or animation filmmaking.   4. A new crop of bills are churning through the California Legislature, addressing everything from vaccination to insurrection to equal pay. There are five proposed bills on hot-button issues including California could put an amendment to tax extreme wealth plus anyone lacking supporting housing and mental health services could be entitled to them.   5. The County's Child Welfare Services held a moment of silence and a special flag raising ceremony Friday to honor the more than 1,700 children who die in the U.S. each year as a result of abuse, violence and neglect. That's an average of five children per day, and the numbers have steadily increased over the last two decades. In addition to the deaths, more than 3 million cases of child abuse are reported in the U.S. each year. (Press Release Desk)
