Man Fatally Struck By Freight Train In North County

The collision happened on North County Transit District train tracks that travel through Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, authorities said.

CAMP PENDLETON, CA — A man was hit and killed by a freight train early Saturday morning on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in northern San Diego County, authorities said.

The deadly collision happened at 2:18 a.m. near mile post marker 219.5 on North County Transit District train tracks that travel through the base, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The man was hit by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train, sheriff's Sgt. Jason King said. He died at the scene.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office will identify the man and determine the cause and manner of his death, King said.
