Mariners 936 Sea Scouts Get Ready for Another Great Season
Mariner youth explore the coast, host new recruit evenings, and prepare to compete in local charity regatta.
As spring approaches so begins another great season of seafaring adventures for Mariners sea scouts of Dana Point. Members of the ship recently returned from a 4-day cruise on the Spirit of Dana Point tall ship, gaining skills and making memories that will last a lifetime. The sea scouts set sail up the coast to Long Beach with ports of call at the Los Angeles Maritime Institute; home of the twin brigantines Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson, the flagships of the Institute. Time was spent in port of San Pedro then on to Catalina Harbor, mooring in Little Gibraltar to go ashore and explore the Island
The Mariners coed program is for 14-18 year olds and incorporates all aspects of seamanship and team building skills. Mariner Juniors is a shorter program for 12-14 year olds that offers sailing lessons and an overnight cruise to Newport Beach as well as learning maritime fundamentals. Mariners maintains a fleet of large vessels used for frequent cruises to Catalina throughout the year, and smaller competitive boats for both recreation and racing.
A high point in the SoCal youth racing calendar approaches with the annual Jeff Adam Regatta on March 5th. Now in its fourth year, this popular event attracts young racers from up and down the coast to take part in one of the few open ocean youth regattas in Southern California.
