Mission Pacific Hotel Opens As 'Top Gun' House Repainted Blue

More than 2 years after construction began, the Mission Pacific Hotel opened to the public with the Rooftop Bar attracting locals.

OCEANSIDE, CA — The Mission Pacific Hotel opened on Wednesday, and Oceanside locals were finally able to get a look inside. It has been over 2 years since they first broke ground on the Hyatt-owned hotels in February 2019. Next door to the Mission Pacific, The Seabird Resort will open on Tuesday, combined they are the largest oceanfront hotel development in San Diego County in more than 50 years.

The official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for both hotels is scheduled for May 27th. That gives extra time to add finishing touches, like a new coat of paint for the historic Graves House. Since the renovation began the house had been painted brown, but it appears the house is returning to the "Top Gun" Blue it had for the 1986 action movie.

The victorian style beach cottage is being renovated into a decadent dessert bar named Charlie's, after Kelly McGillis's character in the movie. The history of the Graves house is much older than the movie, as it is one of the oldest buildings in Oceanside. It was built in 1887 by Dr. Henry Graves who was one of the earliest residents of the city.

Next to the Graves House, there is an open seating area overlooking the ocean that leads into the front of the lobby area. Inside the lobby of the Mission Pacific, staff were waiting to greet guests in the beautifully decorated lobby. But all the action was happening six floors up on the Rooftop Bar. The picturesque warm and sunny Oceanside afternoon was perfect weather for opening day and a dozen or so people were scattered about the open area sampling drinks and appetizers.

The pool area next to the Rooftop Bar is only available to guests and appeared empty, except for a couple relaxing in lounge chairs. There is a walk-in bar area next to the pool for those wanting to get out of the sun. A few locals were chatting with the bartender who had just moved to Oceanside. The bartender was overheard saying that guests had begun checking in that morning but they did not expect it to get busy until the weekend.
