Navy Detonates Missiles Off Coast of Camp Pendleton

Two Sea Sparrow missiles were dropped while being loaded by helicopter onto a ship Aug. 30.

Two Sea Sparrow missiles were safely detonated on the floor of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Camp Pendleton, Navy officials said.

The missiles were jettisoned when they swung out of control while being loaded by a helicopter onto a ship Aug. 30. Officials said the missiles fell 400 feet and ended up about 60 feet beneath the water.

Navy explosive ordnance disposal technicians detonated the missiles in a controlled blast on Monday about 1.7 miles from Camp Pendleton.
