Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. NCTD drops mask mandate on vehicles and in stations. The change impacts Coaster and Sprinter trains, Breeze buses, Flex on-demand service and Lift paratransit services. "Based on updated guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the North Country Transit District will no longer require face coverings to be worn onboard vehicles or in stations, effective immediately," said Colleen Windsor, spokeswoman for the transit agency. (Carlsbad Patch)
  2. The Oceanside Unified School District board recently approved the sale of the remaining 8 acres of the former Garrison School property to housing developer Van Daele Homes for $16 million. The board unanimously approved the sale and purchase agreement during its April 12 meeting. Developer Van Daele Homes is only buying about 8.2 acres of the total 11.2 acres of property located at 333 Garrison Street, while the other 3 acres were purchased by the City of Oceanside for $3.3 million in February for the El Corazon Sewer Lift Station. (Coast News)
  3. A magnitude 3.9 earthquake shook Southern California Tuesday afternoon, and others were reported earlier. The moderate temblor reported at 1:30 p.m. by the U.S. Geological Survey was centered about 4 miles southeast of Brawley in Imperial County. The area is near the border with Mexico. Just 8 minutes earlier, a magnitude 3.6 quake rocked the region, the USGS reported. (San Diego Patch)
  4. Oceanside waste collection rates to jump nearly $10 a month. Residential and commercial waste collection rates will increase significantly by 2024 due to new state mandates aiming to keep food and organic materials out of landfills. The Oceanside City Council narrowly approved its new contract with Waste Management of California for trash, recycling and organic material pick-up and processing in a 3-2 vote earlier this month at the April 6 meeting. (Coast News)
  5. Dismantlement work at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station has been on hold for the past week after a worker on April 11 fell about 5 feet into an open space in one of the rooms primed for demolition, injuring the worker's shoulder. The worker was taken to a nearby hospital and released, and officials at Southern California Edison — the operators of the now-shuttered plant known as SONGS for short — put a stop to all dismantlement efforts to start an investigation.
