Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond is calling for a one-year California gas tax suspension. Desmond represents District 5, which includes Oceanside. The skyrocketing cost of gasoline shows no signs of letting up and Californians continue to pay among the highest in the nation for a gallon of gas. Much of the added cost of gas in the Golden State is because of taxes and fees. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. The Friends of the Oceanside Public Library announced the March 7 opening of Jane and Evie's Used Books, a storefront destination selling gently used books, DVDs, CDs and puzzles. The store's initial operating hours are 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday, at 323 N. Coast Highway, across the street from the Civic Center Library. Chris Wilson, Friends of the Oceanside Public Library President, said, "The Friends were advised of an amazing Coast Highway storefront option that would accomplish two goals: to honor longtime Friends Jane Cheadle and Evie Magaña, and offer the community another opportunity to support the Library." (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  3. How much of Camp Pendleton Marine John Basilone's story really happened? First premiered on HBO's "The Pacific" the show focused on the United States Marine Corps's actions in the Pacific Theater of Operations within the wider Pacific War of World War II. Understandably, much of The Pacific's story, therefore, harks back to real people, places, and events, including the incredible true story of Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone. In The Pacific's theatre of war, John Basilone's (Jon Seda) heroism lights up the miniseries' over the course of the 10-episode run. (Screen Rant)
  4. Californians may get another stimulus check after all thanks to a massive projected budget surplus for the second year in a row. The forecast surplus, estimated at $45.7 billion, would exceed the state's constitutional limit, which restricts the amount of tax revenue the state can spend. Voters approved Proposition 4, commonly known as the Gann Limit, in 1979. That limit required lawmakers to return some of the excess funds to taxpayers as a rebate. (Carlsbad Patch)
  5. New homeowners in Oceanside may find themselves assessed an additional $376 annually to help cover the costs of police and fire protection. The city is preparing to create a community facilities district to cover the increasing costs of public safety services for its steadily growing population. New developments larger than 16 homes would be required to join as a condition of approval. "We have fallen behind," Mayor Esther Sanchez said at last week's Oceanside City Council meeting. "This is really about being able to provide services. We're not talking about creating a higher level of service ... we're talking about basics and continuing (that) level of service." (San Diego Union-Tribune)
