Here are the top four stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- Oceanside police recently hosted its second catalytic converter etching event to help crack down on catalytic converter thefts. Police officers etched individual license plate numbers into 90 vehicles for free. A protective measure to help trace stolen parts back to their rightful owners. Matching a stolen catalytic converter to the vehicle it was stolen from, is an important step in the pursuit of a criminal case against the thieves. Police are urging car owners to engrave their vehicle's identification number on their converter to link the part to their vehicle. (CBS News 8)
- The Buena Vista Lagoon that runs between Oceanside and Carlsbad was awarded a $1 million grant by the State Fish and Wildlife Department. The grant will be given to the San Diego Association of Governments for planning the restoration of the lagoon. The $1 million announced last month comes on top of $3 million the state Wildlife Conservation Board awarded in December to SANDAG, which oversees planning and contracting for the proposed cleanup of the stagnant 220-acre lagoon. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
- Took a break from the news this weekend? Not to worry, we've rounded up some of the stories you missed in SoCal on Saturday and Sunday. A small plane crashed in San Diego County, killing the passenger and leaving the pilot in critical condition. More than 600 pharmacists and pharmacy workers at Ralphs, Vons, Albertsons and Pavilions stores in Southern California could walk out following an "overwhelming" membership vote to authorize union leadership to call for a strike. Three men were shot and wounded on the front lawn of a home in the Ridgeview/Webster neighborhood of San Diego, police said. A 41-year-old man was shot to death in his back while walking in a Linda Vista neighborhood, police said. (San Diego Patch)
- Monsoon moisture is predicted to remain in San Diego County for much of the week ahead, with daily chances for showers and thunderstorms in the mountains and the desert slopes each afternoon, the National Weather Service said. Marine layer clouds were expected to remain in place over the coast and valleys, with coverage spreading about 25-30 miles inland. Temperatures may run slightly below normal this week given the increased moisture in place, but it could feel muggier in the monsoon pattern. No hazardous marine weather was expected through Thursday. (San Diego Patch)
