Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. Oceanside has approved a plan for unarmed security guards to patrol downtown, beachfront and Civic Center neighborhoods. "The City Council allocated $1.33 million for a contract with MainStreet Oceanside to employ four trained security guards seven days a week, 24 hours a day. A one-year pilot program starts this weekend and was approved under the city’s Measure X spending plan. The guards will patrol problem areas with vehicles, bicycles and on foot. “The city has seen a significant increase in complaints of crime in these areas, and increasing security will improve the quality of life and safety for Oceanside residents, businesses and visitors,” states a report from the city manager’s office." (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  2. Took a break from the news this weekend? Worry not: we've rounded up some of the stories you missed in SoCal on Saturday and Sunday. This weekend, a helicopter plummeted into a California neighborhood, injuring the pilot and passenger. A bat found outside the lobby of a medical building in Irvine has tested positive for rabies, prompting authorities to issue a warning. 4. The Oceanside Police Department is looking for a missing 74-year-old man with Alzheimer's disease. At 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Edgar Cruz walked away from his home at 3200 Mission Cove Way, police said. He has black and gray hair with brown eyes and is 5-feet-7 inches tall and 150 pounds.
