Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- Oceanside City Manager Deanna Lorson has resigned effective immediately, the city attorney said Wednesday after a closed meeting to discuss her performance evaluation. The City Council voted 3-1 to accept the resignation, with Mayor Esther Sanchez opposed and Councilmember Christopher Rodriguez absent, City Attorney John Mullen said in a brief report on actions taken in the closed session. No reason was given for her decision to step down, and there was no prior indication of her intention to leave the job. A copy of her resignation letter will be placed on file with the city clerk, and a separation agreement will be presented at the City Council's April 6 meeting, Mullen said. - A Camp Pendleton marine charged with nine counts of sex assault faced a judge in a military courtroom on Wednesday. ABC 10News was inside the courtroom, where prosecutors said that there were at least five different victims and all of them appear to be service members. (ABC 10 News San Diego KGTV)
- Oceanside Downtown History Walks will resume in April. For over 25 years the Oceanside Historical Society has hosted Downtown History Walks on the 2nd Saturday of each month beginning in April and run through September. The walks "amble" around the downtown area as well as Pacific Street and the Pier area. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
- A 20-year-old Oceanside resident was arrested for suspected drunken driving on Wednesday, after a fatal accident shut down northbound Interstate 5 near Carlsbad, according to CHP. One person was killed and another was critically injured in the two-vehicle collision that was reported around 3 a.m. Isidrone Martinez, a 20-year-old Oceanside resident, was driving a grey Honda Civic on I-5 northbound, south of La Costa Avenue, through a Caltrans construction zone, with a hard closure in place, which shut down the #3 and #4 northbound lanes. (CBS News 8)
- Oceanside Unified school district may have to cut more than $8 million from its budget by 2023-24 if both enrollment and average daily attendance continue to decline. The district had previously projected the average daily attendance (ADA) would be about 90.3%, but actual numbers are showing attendance has dropped to 87.86%, which will drastically decrease the amount of state funding the district will receive by about $20 million. (Coast News)
