Here are the top four stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. The trial started for a woman claiming Satan told her to kill the first person she saw in April 2020. Jennifer Ramos, 25, is accused of killing middle school PE teacher Chad Danielson as he approached his front door at about 7:45 a.m. April 10, 2020. Ramos would later explain to Oceanside police she was taking directions from Satan, following an order in her head to kill the first person she saw, a prosecutor told a Vista Superior Court jury Monday morning. The defense attorney said Ramos has spent her life fighting mental illness. On the day of the stabbing, he said, Ramos "lost the battle with the demons in her head" and "went out and killed an innocent man for no reason." (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  2. A man is suspected of kidnapping his ex-girlfriend's son in Vista and holding him captive for hours before releasing him unharmed. Earlier in the day, the mother had gotten into a confrontation with an ex-boyfriend, 46-year-old Donta Law, the subject of a restraining order she had filed. The quarrel ended when Law allegedly smashed several windows on the woman's car and then left, according to sheriff's officials. The child's mother arrived home about 10:30 p.m. Monday to discover the boy was missing, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. About 2:30 a.m., Law dropped off the boy with his mother at the Oceanside Transit Station and then fled. Law's whereabouts have remained unknown since. (Patch)
  3. San Diego Humane Society is waiving adoption fees for adult dogs in an effort to raise awareness, encourage adoptions and make space at its shelters. The organization has 1,742 animals in care, including 172 adult dogs that need forever homes. "This has been a challenging summer for us, with a lot of animals coming through our doors in need of our help," said San Diego Humane Society CEO and president Dr. Gary Weitzman. "Now we're asking the community to help us help them by opening their hearts and homes to a new family member." All adoption fees for adult dogs 7 months and older will be waived through Sunday, Sept. 18. San Diego Humane Society is open for walk-in adoptions from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday at its campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego. (Patch)
  4. A record high minimum temperature and rainfall were reported in parts of San Diego County Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. Vista set a record with a minimum low temperature on Sunday night. It was 71, tying the highest minimum temperature recorded in 2015. Showers and thunderstorms passed through San Diego County on Monday but with more isolated activity and less intensity as the atmosphere continued to dry out. Chances of showers and thunderstorms are expected to decrease Tuesday and through the end of the week.
A deeper marine layer was predicted to allow for night and morning low clouds and fog into portions of the valleys through Thursday. Temperatures west of the mountains were expected to gradually cool through the end of the week. (Patch)
