Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. The San Diego County Vector Control Program (VCP) will conduct its first routine aerial mosquito-fighting larvicide applications on Oceanside waterways beginning April 27 and April 28. Larvicide Application helps reduce mosquito breeding and decrease the risk of West Nile virus (WNV) transmission. There are nine waterway areas targeted for application in Oceanside that include approximately 270 acres. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. Looking for things to do this weekend in Southern California? Patch has you covered. See what's slated this weekend today and Sunday. Avocado Festival; Boysenberry Festival; Poppy Festival; Wine Festival; Spring Food Truck Festival: SoCal Weekend (Patch)
  3. San Diego County Crime Log is a look at some of this week's police, fire and courtroom stories from across the region. Driver Escapes Minutes Before Train Hits Car In North County; Suspect In 3 High-Speed North County Police Pursuits Jailed; Man Robs U.S. Bank Branch In Escondido: FBI (Patch)
  4. There are seven candidates on the June 7 ballot in the campaign for the 49th Congressional District that represents south Orange and north San Diego counties. Democratic Rep. Mike Levin is being challenged by Orange County supervisor/businesswoman Lisa Bartlett, businessman/nonprofit executive Brian Maryott, sheriff's deputy/businessman Josiah O'Neil, Oceanside councilmember/businessman/farmer Christopher Rodriguez and cybersecurity manager/Airman Renee Taylor, all Republicans, and private nurse/businesswoman Nadia Bahia Smalley, a Democrat. The top two vote-getters will advance to a Nov. 8 runoff. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  5. The Secretary for the U.S. Department of Energy paid a visit to the San Onofre nuclear site Thursday to discuss the search for solutions on nuclear waste storage. "We know how to store nuclear waste safely," said Secretary Jennifer Granholm. "The question is where we do it." A stalemate has plagued this issue for decades, but they're hoping to make progress in finding an interim storage location for the spent nuclear fuel sitting in cannisters at San Onofre. While engineers insist the spent fuel is kept safe on location at San Onofre, the move to find a more permanent storage location is underway. (CBS News 8)
