Here are the top four stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle while trying to cross Mission Avenue, the Oceanside Police Department said Saturday. The accident happened at 5:37 a.m. Friday on Mission Avenue between the intersections of Roymar Road and Foussat Road, Officer Jennifer Atenza said. "The pedestrian suffered major head trauma and other significant injuries," she said. Despite life-saving measures attempted by an off-duty Camp Pendleton EMT, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, Atenza said. The victim's name was not immediately released. The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene and was fully cooperative, Atenza said. Drugs and alcohol were not believed to be a factor in the crash. (Patch)

  3. The 16th annual Nissan Super Girl Surf Pro competition and festival returns to Oceanside Pier Sept. 16-18. The all-female surfing event includes local competitors Caitlin Simmers of Oceanside, Alyssa Spencer of Carlsbad and Samantha Sibley of San Clemente. A free Nissan Concert Series features 15 artists performing live concerts, including acts such as The Offspring, Smash Mouth, Hoobastank, The Expendables and Kira Kosarin. (Oside News)
  4. A man who fatally stabbed a 77-year-old retiree at the victim's Oceanside beach house was sentenced Friday to 12 years in state prison. Carey Lamont Reid Jr., 25, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the 2018 slaying of John Roth, who was stabbed in the neck while lying on his couch in his home on North Tremont Street near Surfrider Way. Reid went on trial last month on charges of murder, burglary and a special circumstance allegation of murder during a residential burglary, but a Vista jury deadlocked 6-6 on the murder count.
