OCEANSIDE, CA — Oceanside Police Detective Chris James has a friend with Down Syndrome named Tyler that had a lifelong goal of becoming a police officer, and he mentioned his aspirations every time they saw each other. Chris relayed Tyler’s goals to Chief Armijo and asked if OPD could help Tyler achieve his lifelong goal, if only for a day, and the Chief enthusiastically supported the idea.

On August 06, 2021, OPD held a swearing-in ceremony for Tyler making him an honorary police officer. Chief Armijo presented Tyler with a Certificate of Appointment and Special OPD Honorary Police Officer shirt. After the ceremony, Detective James took Tyler on a modified ride-along. They patrolled the city, met with some local preschoolers and read them a book, and went on a ride in the OPD Harbor Boat. It was a truly special day.

Congratulations Tyler and kudos to the Oceanside Police Department for their work in the community.
