  3. A brutal and long heat wave will bring scorching temperatures to San Diego County and the rest of Southern California this week and through Labor Day weekend. An excessive heat warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Monday in the county, according to the National Weather Service. Over the period, "dangerously hot conditions" are expected with temperatures well into the 80s at the beaches, the 90s in the inland valleys and up to 115 in the deserts. According to the NWS, high humidity levels will make it feel even hotter. (Patch)
  4. Home prices in San Diego County declined by 0.7% in June in the first drop since the runup in prices began during the coronavirus pandemic, according to the authoritative Case Shiller index released Tuesday. The decline was a general phenomenon in the West, with the Denver, Los Angeles, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle markets also experiencing a drop in home prices in June. The fall in prices ranged from 0.1% in Denver to 1.9% in Seattle.
San Diego prices had risen 0.5% in May and despite the June decline are still up 21.6% over the past 12 months. (Times of San Diego)
  5. A penguin with a degenerative foot condition at the San Diego Zoo has a chance to live a normal life after being fitted with custom orthopedic footwear. The 4-year-old penguin named Lucas has a chronic condition known as bumblefoot, which covers a range of avian degenerative foot conditions, according to the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. If left untreated, bumblefoot could lead to sepsis and death by secondary infection. "We were pleasantly surprised at the immediate change in Lucas after we fitted him with his new boots," said Debbie Denton, senior wildlife care specialist at the San Diego Zoo. (Patch)
