Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- The Seabird Resort in Oceanside has been named one of the 'Most Romantic New Wedding Venues in Southern California.' Brides magazine said this seaside escape is home to plenty of mesmerizing venues for extravagant weddings or more small-scale ones. Either way, this is a location for couples who appreciate playful decor. It's in the midst of the Oceanside Arts District and boasts artwork curated by Oceanside Museum of Art — and easy access to the Pacific Ocean and a sandy beach, of course. (Not to mention no-brainer train access from Los Angeles and San Diego.) (Brides)
- Oceanside Police are still searching for a suspect in a hit-and-run that killed a grandmother walking in her neighborhood on June 5. The driver jumped the curb and drove onto the sidewalk for several feet before hitting Cecilia Shu, 68, after which he flipped a u-turn and fled the scene. Shu died at the scene. According to police spokesperson Jennifer Atenza, the suspect's car, a black Honda HR-V, model year 2019 or newer, has been seen speeding through the neighborhood often by other residents. (Coast News)
- Former Marine and cannabis company president Bryan Buckley is leading an effort to help veterans combat post-traumatic stress and opiate addiction. To date, the sales of HVGC (Helmand Valley Growers Co) cannabis products have channeled $57,000 to the Battle Brothers Foundation an Oceanside, Calif., nonprofit whose veteran-focused efforts include funding the studies Buckley hopes will be proof enough to move forward. But the goal, he said, is "a few more hundred thousand [dollars] away." (LA TIMES)
- The San Diego area's red-hot housing market is beginning to cool off. The latest data says prices didn't climb as much in April as in previous months. In March, home prices in the San Diego metro region were up 29.6% over March of 2021 which was an 18-year high. But the Case-Shiller index which tracks housing, reports they were only up 28.5% in April. That is still a sky-high rate of increase, but a move in the opposite direction is notable. (KPBS)
- Three Vietnam War veterans were awarded the Bronze Star Medal on Friday, June 24 on the parade deck aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, following the recruit graduation ceremony. The veterans were recognized fifty-four years after their valiant actions in the war. John Ligato III and Larry D. Lewis, who served as riflemen, and Michael B. Ker, who served as a corpsman with Alpha Company, First Battalion, First Marine Division, received the awards for their heroic achievements in combat during the Battle of Hue City from January 31 to February 5, 1968. Are you an Oceanside-Camp Pendleton resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
