Here are the top four stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. Oceanside Police have identified a suspect in the shooting death of 22-year-old Chelsea Pacheco, an Oceanside resident and pre-school teacher at KinderCare. Vicente Huerta, who police say is a 25-year-old Oceanside gang member, is accused of the shooting that occurred on June 4, at 11:44 a.m. near Bush Street and Archer Street. Investigators say Pacheco was riding in a car with friends when they got into an altercation with Huerta. As they drove away, Huerta fired at their vehicle, OPD Lt. Taurino Valdovinos said. (NBC San Diego)
  2. A 31-year-old woman was killed in a crash Monday night on the I-5 freeway just south of Carlsbad Village Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol. Two people who fled the scene were arrested, CHP Sgt. Jeff Walker said. It was not immediately clear how the crash occurred, but it involved a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban, 2003 Ford Expedition and 2006 Freightliner big rig, Walker said. The Expedition's driver died at the scene, according to the Highway Patrol. Two occupants of the Suburban, which was reported stolen, ran away but were later arrested. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
  3. A late-spring heat wave will generate hazardously scorching temperatures in San Diego-area desert communities this week, forecasters advised Tuesday. From 10 a.m. on Thursday until 8 p.m. on Sunday, triple-digit daytime highs, possibly up to 117 degrees, will prevail in Borrego Springs and other parts of the county's arid eastern reaches, according to the National Weather Service. The swelter will "significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working (outside) or participating in outdoor activities," the federal agency cautioned. (City News Service)
  4. One of California's largest wetland restoration projects came to a conclusion on Saturday with the official opening of San Elijo Lagoon's pedestrian suspension bridge in Encinitas. The opening marks the end of nearly five years of work to restore the lagoon's habitat and provide updated trails and other amenities. The project was part of the massive Build NCC effort to widen Interstate 5 and update mass transit and pedestrian options along coastal north San Diego County. (northcoastcurrent.com)
