Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- Oceanside has approved an electric vehicle shuttle service for visitors and residents downtown for six months starting Memorial Day weekend. "With most COVID-19 restrictions lifting ... this summer will be a busy one for tourism," according to a staff report by Economic Development Manager Michelle Geller. "A shuttle service will move passengers around more quickly and efficiently, alleviate parking congestion, and present a fun, new amenity for Oceanside residents and visitors," Geller said in the report. - A Ninth Circuit panel will decide whether to revive claims brought by three U.S. Marines injured in a 2017 gas line explosion at Camp Pendleton. During a routine training exercise, an amphibious assault vehicle struck an uncovered, 6-inch PVC natural gas line, rupturing the pipe and causing a massive explosion. Of the 14 Marines and one sailor on board, three Marines — plaintiffs Marco Alires, Alexander Cruz, and Oscar De La Rosa — were badly burned. The Marines accused San Diego Gas & Electric, which provides gas for Camp Pendleton, of allowing its PVC pipes to become old, outdated, improperly buried and out of compliance. - The annual Meet the Chefs event raised around $125,000 to fund crucial programs for foster youth and young adults in Casa de Amparo's programs. The nonprofit offers a short-term residential therapeutic program, a residential campus called Casa Kids in Oceanside, and transitional housing program New Directions for recently emancipated individuals ages 18 to 25. "This event raises much-needed funds for the work that Casa de Amparo does," said nonprofit CEO Michael Barnett, noting that the pandemic made fundraising more difficult in recent years. (Coast News)
- In one doomsday scenario, rocket attacks on the nuclear waste stored at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station send plumes of dangerous radiation skyward. Critics in Southern California spend a lot of time worrying about the safety of the 3.6 million pounds of spent fuel entombed on the bluff above the blue Pacific — but the U.S. Government Accountability Office fixes its gaze on more mundane, and perhaps more terrifying, scenarios involving much smaller amounts of nuclear material routinely used by businesses, hospitals, universities and the like. - The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County dropped today for the 14th time in 15 days, decreasing 1.9 cents to $5.792. The average price has dropped 22.6 cents over the past 15 days, including 1.1 cents Tuesday, according to figures from the AAA and Oil PriceInformation Service. It dropped 12 consecutive days, was unchanged Monday and resumed dropping Tuesday. The run of dropping prices follows a 35-day streak of increases totaling $1.274 that pushed the average price to a record $6.018 March 29. (City News Service)
