Oceanside Chamber presents Operation Appreciation at the Oceanside Pier Amphitheater on May 21! A day of fun and recognition for all active-duty military and their families as they are treated to a day of free food, entertainment and a fun zone for kids. Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

1. Oceanside 'Top Gun' House is set to open on Friday after millions spent on moving and renovations. It's been a long road for the Graves House to finally open up as a dessert shop at the Mission Pacific Hotel on the oceanfront in downtown Oceanside. The house is more famously known as the 'Top Gun House' from the 1986 action movie. The finishing touches are being added to the victorian style beach cottage's renovation into a dessert shop called High-Pie.(Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
2. A series of dog illnesses and deaths in Arrowood are worrying residents. After connecting with neighbors during a homeowners' association meeting, pet owners learned that since 2020, approximately 34 pets had fallen ill under similar circumstances throughout the Arrowood community. Eighteen of those animals later died. Starting in 2020, Arrowood Master Homeowner's Association hired BrightView Landscape Services as its new landscaping company. Many residents wondered if the company's spraying of pesticides had poisoned the animals of Arrowood, particularly those walking along the trail. (Coast News)
3. It's an election year and voting for the primaries begins in just a few days. Dr. Zeb Navarro Oceanside City Clerk, gives details about the upcoming Primary Elections on June 7 on this newest edition of KOCT's "Did You Know?" Ballots will be mailed out on May 9 to all registered voters with ballot drop off locations open that same day. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
4. The County of San Diego joined CAL FIRE and partner agencies at the Ramona CAL FIRE Air Attack Base to explain what residents can do to prepare for wildfires. Almost half of the state's largest and most damaging wildfires occurred in 2020 and 2021, burning almost 7 million acres. But there are proactive steps you can take to prepare your home and communities to be more resilient to the impacts of wildfire. (Press Release Desk)
5. The county announced grant awards of up to $250,000 are available to help community and non-profit organizations support, promote and improve educational options for San Diego County children. County leaders want to help organizations identify and implement new and innovative methods to support educational equity and acceleration of learning, support behavioral health needs, address housing, food stability and poverty and provide mentorship opportunities for kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) youth and their families.
