Here are the top four stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. A brush fire deemed the #WalaFire broke out in Oceanside early Sunday afternoon with firefighters on the ground and in the air. The fire was contained about three hours after being reported. An estimated 80 acres were burned but no reports of injuries or structure damage were reported. See photos of CalFire aircrews dropping flame retardant. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. One-third of the nation's public pools and beaches face closures this summer amid lifeguard shortages, and Oceanside is no exception. Some Oceanside lifeguard towers will close this summer due to staffing shortages, the fire department told Fox5. Oceanside is down 12 lifeguards. To correct this, the department will have to place staff at the most hazardous areas. (Patch)
  3. Oceanside City Council votes to join the Clean Energy Alliance, a group of North County cities that buy their power from sources other than SDG&E. "I'm actually very excited about the city of Oceanside entering the JPA," said Oceanside Mayor Esther Sanchez. "We are looking at about a 2.8 percent per month rate savings for homeowners on the base charge." The council voted 4-1 last week for a resolution to join the alliance, with Councilmember Christopher Rodriguez opposed. He expressed questions about the cost of renewable energy and the way it is purchased, which he called "paper shuffling and smoke and mirrors." (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  4. Oceanside Police are investigating after a vehicle went off the road and landed in a shallow river Saturday afternoon, authorities said. The incident occurred around 4:40 p.m. when police received a call reporting a single vehicle in the river near Mesa Drive and Rancho del Oro Road, according to Lt. Marco Mendoza. The driver, whose name was not released, was given a ride home and was not injured. Police say drugs and alcohol were not a factor in this crash. (FOX 5 San Diego)
