'Operation Appreciation' Honors Camp Pendleton and Armed Forces

The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce and Military Affairs Committee hots the 10th Annual Armed Force Day at Strands Beach Saturday.

The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce and the Military Affairs Committee recognized the armed forces Saturday at its 10th Annual Armed Force Day, offering free food and entertainment to active duty military personnel.

"This is our salute to our military," said Oceanside Chamber of Commerce Vice Chairman Chip Dykes. "All the food and entertainment are all donated by the businesses members of the commerce."

The event was filled with performances from the Bonsall West Elementery School Choir, San Diego Firefighters Pipes and Drums, JWJ & Cruisers, Blue Zone and The Flying Mangoes.

For the younger attendees, a children's area was open with carnival rides and bounce houses. Face-painting and temporary tatoos were available by the local Armed Services YMCA.

Marine Corps base Camp Pendleton also had a presence, supplying an area for guests to explore military vehicles, from Humvees to hovercraft.

Marines walked around full battle gear, one in a bomb-diffusing suit, giving guests the opportunity to take photos and ask about the equipment.
