SUNDAY, JULY 30, 2017 • 1:40 P.M. PT • PETCO PARK • SAN DIEGO, CA
LHP CLAYTON RICHARD (5-11, 5.37) vs. RHP GERRIT COLE (8-7, 4.12)
GAME 105 • HOME GAME 54 • FM 94.9 • XEMO 860 • FOX SPORTS SAN DIEGO
AHOY, MATIES: With last night's 4-2 victory, the Padres are now riding a four-game winning streak, and with a win today, the Padres would tie their season-high winning streak of five games, set from May 28 to June 2...San Diego has won seven of the last 10 games...the Friars have not lost a series at home against the Bucs since June of 2014...if the Friars win today, it will have been the first time since August 20-22, 2012 that the Padres will have swept the Pirates.
- Starter RHP Dinelson Lamet tossed a career-high 104 pitches in the game, earning his fifth win of the season...the rookie had not allowed a single hit to the Pirates until RF Adam Frazier ended Lamet’s no-hit bid with his single to right field in the fifth.
- Jose Pirela hit two triples in last night's game, and OF Manuel Margot homered for the eighth time this season.
- INF Cory Spangenberg recorded his 20th multi-hit game this season, and he has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games, batting .373 (19-for-51) with one double, two triples, one home run, 11 RBI and 13 runs scored.
THE GROUNDER GAMES: Southpaw starter Clayton Richard has induced a ML best 247 ground balls...his 58.8 ground ball percentage leads the NL and is second-best in the Majors behind only TOR Marcus Stroman’s 63.5 percentage...he has forced 21 ground-ball double plays this season, which leads the NL and ranks second in the ML, behind only Stroman’s 23.
JULY STRIDE: The Padres’ .583 winning percentage in the month of July has been the highest thus far by the Padres in a single month this season (posting a 14-10 record)...the club has allowed the fewest runs this month (121) and scored the most (108).
KIRBY AND CO.: Last night, RHP Kirby Yates earned his first save in a Padres uniform…it was his second career save (his first coming on July 20, 2014 at MIN, while pitching for Tampa Bay in his rookie season)...the Padres bullpen has now accrued four consecutive saves, which is the longest save streak for the Padres this season and the longest active safe streak in the Majors.
- This season, the Padres have 30 saves, ranking fifth most in the Majors.
TRIPLE-DOUBLE: INF/OF Jose Pirela hit two triples in last night's game for the first time in his career…it was the 16th time a Padre hit two triples in a game since Nick Hundley did so on August 16, 2011, and he became the 15th Padre to accomplish the feat (Dave Roberts recorded a pair of triples in two games in his Padres’ career)…Pirela, who had just four triples in 101 major-league games entering play on Saturday, became the eighth player this season to record multiple triples in a game (ELIAS).
THREE'S COMPANY: The Padres' 25 triples this season tie for third-most in the Majors...since the All-Star break, the club has hit 10 triples, which lead the league...the Padres are the only team in the ML to have two triples in the same inning twice this season (last: July 21 at SF).
ROSTER MOVES: The Padres reinstated C Austin Hedges from the 10-day concussion list and INF Yangervis Solarte from the 10-day disabled list...Hedges makes his return since receiving a foul-ball to the catcher's mask on July 14 vs. SF, and Solarte returns since being place on the disabled list on June 23rd with a left oblique strain...the club optioned OF Jabari Blash and reliever RHP Kevin Quackenbush to Triple-A El Paso.
HOME (AND ROAD) IMPROVEMENT: Entering the All-Star break, the Padres' .227 collective batting average ranked last in the league, but since the All-Star game, the Friars are tied for the most hits in the Majors (157), most triples (10), second-most RBI (84), and tied for the second-most runs scored (87).
RAMPANT RENFROE: With his double last night, OF Hunter Renfroe has had six extra-base hits in his past seven games (three homers and three doubles)....his 22 doubles lead all National League rookies and rank second-most in the Majors, behind HOU Yuli Gurriel's 27...Renfroe is the only Major League rookie this season to have 20-or-more home runs and doubles (he has 20 homers and 22 doubles).
PADRES ON DECK: Advanced Single-A C Austin Allen went 4-for-6 with a double, two homers and six RBI, as the Storm had a total of seven homers in an 18-1 win at Visalia...Michael Gettys, Fernando Perez, Carlos Belen, Edwin Moreno and Kyle Overstreet all homered for the Storm.
- LHP Adrian Morejon allowed a run on five hits with two strikeouts in his first start since being promoted to Single-A Fort Wayne.
- LF Robbie Podorsky went 4-for-5 with a triple and a stolen base for short-season Single-A Tri-City.
DATES IN PADRES HISTORY: On July 30, 1984, LHP Dave Dravecky pitched the ninth one-hitter in Padres history, shutting out the Dodgers on one-hit with four strikeouts in a complete-game, 12-0 win at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
- On July 31, 1979, RF Dave Winfield went 5-for-5 with a double, a homer and four RBI in the Padres 10-3 win in Atlanta...in his final at-bat, Winfield became the first Padre to get hits in eight straight at-bats.
