Here are the top four stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- San Diego County calls for vigilance as coronavirus cases and hospitalizations increase. The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency is seeing significant recent spikes in COVID-19 hospitalizations and new cases, prompting officials to call for more vigilance. Lab-confirmed coronavirus cases remain near 10,000 per week, but it is important to note that this figure does not include antigen tests many people now take at home. (Press Release Desk)
- The. U.S. Navy is investigating the death of a sailor found unresponsive aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson Sunday morning. Navy Region Southwest Federal Fire Department paramedics were called to the ship docked at the Naval Air Station North Island where they pronounced the sailor dead, according to the U.S. Navy. According to a statement by the Navy, the circumstances of the death are under investigation, but there are no indications of suicide or foul play. (San Diego Patch)
- A 10-year study by a team from Scripps Institution of Oceanography found that reefs can recover from bleaching due to higher water temperatures. The researchers, who took over 1,500 photos underwater to analyze the changes over time, said the study shows the value of looking at long-term trends amid climate change. The team from marine ecologist Jennifer E. Smith's laboratory monitored Palmyra Atoll, which is located 805 miles south of Hawaii and is not permanently inhabited. It is described as a natural laboratory for monitoring how ecosystems change over time in response to climate warming. (Times of San Diego)
- The Yosemite fire exploded over the weekend and the heat is hampering the battle to save the Giant Sequoias. The Washburn Fire more than doubled in size since Saturday and had forced hundreds of campers and residents to evacuate while also threatening more than 500 mature sequoias in the iconic Mariposa Grove. Crews managed, thus far, to save most of the giant trees, including the 3,000-year-old Grizzly Giant. (Patch)
