NEW DAWN, NEW GAME: In Sunday's matchup, the Padres fell 4-1 to the National League East-leading Washington Nationals, dropping their fifth series against the Nationals at Petco Park since 2010...tonight, the Friars will take on the St. Louis Cardinals for the first time this season...the clubs will meet again at Petco Park when the Padres host the Redbirds for a four-game series from Sept. 4-7...the Padres have lost their last six games against the Cardinals, dating back to April 23 of last season, and the Cardinals have also won six straight home games over the Padres dating back to July 4, 2015...per STATS, it is their longest active home winning streak versus any opponent.

  • On Sunday afternoon, starter Dinelson Lamet was saddled with his fifth loss of the season, working 4.2 innings while walking a career-high six batters…despite the loss, Lamet has allowed three earned runs or less in 11 of his last 15 starts this season, posting a 7-1 record and a 2.67 ERA (19 ER, 64.0 IP) in those outings.
  • INF Wil Myers stole his team-leading 15th base of the season in the first inning.
  • RHP Craig Stammen entered Sunday's game in the fifth against his former team, and he worked 1.1 innings of hitless ball, recording three strikeouts...Stammen has allowed just three earned runs in his last 18 games and 19.1 IP, posting a 1.40 ERA in that time.
  • Sunday marked the sixth game this season in which the Padres did not log a single RBI.

A COMPLETE CLAYTON: LHP Clayton Richard gets the ball for the first time since he tossed the Padres' first complete-game shutout of the season (and the third of his career) on August 16 at Petco Park...Richard has now logged two complete games this season (first: May 21 vs. ARI), and he joins CLE Corey Kluber (four times), MIN Ervin Santana (five times) and TOR Marcus Stroman (twice) as the only four pitchers in MLB this season to throw multiple complete nine-inning games.

WELCOME TO THE GROUNDER GAMES: Southpaw starter Clayton Richard has induced a Major League-leading 298 ground balls this season...his 59.5 ground ball percentage leads the National League and is second-best in the Majors, behind only TOR Marcus Stroman’s 63.2 percentage...Richard has forced 23 ground-ball double plays this season, which ranks first in the NL and tied for second in the Majors with TEX Martin Perez, behind only Stroman’s 27.

ROSTER MOVES: Today, the Padres reinstated OF Matt Szczur from the Family Leave list and optioned LHP Kyle McGrath to Triple-A El Paso.

POST ALL-STAR POWER: Since the All-Star break, the Padres have the fourth-highest increase in slugging percentage in the Majors...Prior to the All-Star game, the Padres had a .383 SLG, and since the break, they have a .437 SLG (a .054 increase), per STATS.

CORY CLUBBER: Since the All-Star break, INF/OF Cory Spangenberg has scored 27 of the Padres' 159 runs...those 27 runs consist of 17 percent of the Padres run total, and the percentage is the fourth highest in the Majors since the break...thanks, STATS.

  • Spangenberg has a .315 average (39-for-124) since the All-Star break this season, after hitting .252 prior to the break...this follows a career-long trend for Spangenberg, as he is a career .301 hitter after the All Star break and a career .251 hitter prior to the break.

WHAT A RELIEF: In the Padres last seven games since August 13, the San Diego bullpen has posted a 2.95 ERA (7 ER, 21.1 IP), which is the fifth-best ERA in the National League in that time...the pen has combined for 27 strikeouts, with opposing batters owning a .192 batting average (15-for-78) against Padre relief arms.

TRIPLE CROWN: The Padres have hit 25 triples this season, ranking eighth-most in the Majors...since the All-Star break, the Friars are tied with the Braves for the second-most triples (10), trailing only the Phillies' 12.

A FESTIVE FEENEY: Join us in wishing our very own Darren Feeney a happy 30th birthday! Darren hails from Eureka, California, and after majoring in Communications at the University of San Diego, he earned his Masters in Sports Management from the University of San Francisco.

PADRES ON DECK: On Monday, RF Hunter Renfroe was a home run shy of the cycle, going 3-for-5 in his first game with Triple-A El Paso since being optioned by the Padres to the Chihuahuas on Friday.
