“We are so excited to have Daniela cleared and ready to go,” Friesen said. “She’s had a non-traditional route to get here, but sometimes those journeys turn out as a win for everyone. We think she can step in and help us, and we are glad to get her going. It’s always exciting to add a quality player who believes in the vision of Aztec soccer.”

A graduate of Laguna Hills High School, Filipovic arrives on Montezuma Mesa from the highly successful San Diego Surf club where she helped it reach a No. 1 national ranking, a conference title in 2013, a national title in 2014, an ECNL championship in 2015 and a runner-up effort at nationals in 2017. She also spent time playing with Slammers FC ECNL.

At Laguna Hills, Filipovic in 2015 helped the Hawks to their first title-game appearance in school history. Despite falling in a shootout, the Hawks finished with an impressive 21-4-1 (6-2 Sea View League) record. The next season, Filipovic earned 2016 first-team all-Sea View League accolades.

Filipovich joins a San Diego State program that features San Diego Surf teammates Yasmin Ahooja, Veronica Avalos, Chloe Frisch and Ariana Robles.

The Aztecs are 1-1 this season and continue preparation for this week’s home games vs. Arizona State on Friday and Long Beach State on Sunday. Both games are set for 7 p.m. PT starts and will stream live on the Mountain West Network.
