Special Delivery: Oceanside Police Help Deliver Baby Girl
An Oceanside police officer swaddled the baby girl in gauze and placed the newborn on her mother's chest.
OCEANSIDE, CA — Police helped deliver a baby girl Monday morning in Oceanside.
Oceanside police received a call around 7:30 a.m. from a man who was on the way to the hospital with his wife who was in labor. The man said he didn't know if they would make it to the hospital. He soon after confirmed his wife was giving birth and pulled over to the shoulder in the area of Vista Way and Rancho Del Oro, Oceanside police spokesman Tom Bussey said.
After arriving at the vehicle, officer Chris Marr rushed to the woman's side, while officer BrettShields, a former emergency medical technician, grabbed a medic kit. Within moments, the mother delivered her baby. Shields swaddled the baby girl in gauze and placed the newborn on her mother's chest.

"As soon as the infant felt her mother, she began to breathe and cry," Bussey said.
Oceanside firefighters arrived and used a delivery kit to cut the umbilical cord and collect the placenta.

"The father and mother are doing fine and are the parents of a healthy baby girl," Bussey said.
The family was taken to Tri-City Medical Center.
