ST. MICHAEL'S BY-THE-SEA BREAKS GROUND ON $210,000 RENOVATION PROJECT

Open Design Pays Homage to Church's Original Architect Albert Fry.

CARLSBAD, Calif., Oct. 5, 2015—St. Michael’s by- the-Sea, a historic Episcopal Church, joyfully announces today that it has broken ground on renovating the western entrance of the architecturally significant Church. With its open floor plan and expansive glass door, Lance O’Donnell of o2 Architects in Palm Springs, Calif., capitalized on the region’s sunny skies and warm climate when redesigning the Narthex to compliment Albert Frey’s vision—the iconic architect that originally designed the church. The project is expected to be completed at the end of 2015.

“After years of planning and praying, we’re excited that the narthex project is finally coming to fruition,” said Father Doran Stambaugh, St. Michael’s rector.

Wanting to capture as much natural light as possible, the new entrance will feature a combination of pocket sliding glass doors, and a movable screen that allows for a variety of configurations to accommodate security, airflow, open air access and egress. o2 Architects will be partnering with Level 3 Construction to complete the redesign.

O’Donnell has a rich heritage of maintaining the historic integrity of Frey’s previous works. The renowned prolific architect established desert modernism, and did most of his work in Palm Springs—most notably the Palm Springs Tramway Gas Station, which has been updated by O’Donnell.
