A day of fun and recognition for all active-duty military and their families as they are treated to a day of free food, entertainment and a fun zone for kids. Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- The City of Oceanside is hosting an "Earth Day of Service and Celebration" event on Saturday, April 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Buccaneer Park to promote sustainability in the region, preserve the environment and educate the community about everyday simple steps to protect our shared planet. The event will feature arts, crafts, cleanups, music and other family-friendly activities for the community to take part in. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
- A man who allegedly led police on three road chases in north San Diego County over a four-day period was arrested Wednesday. Investigators from CHP and the Oceanside Police Department located and arrested the suspect in a Walmart parking lot. The CHP took 24-year-old Thomas William Spoden of San Diego into custody outside the Walmart Supercenter at College Boulevard and Marron Road in Oceanside shortly after 8:30 a.m., CHP public affairs Officer Hunter Gerber said. - County Supervisor Jim Desmond Wednesday touted improvements to North County services, including behavioral health, but also said there's still work to do, especially when it comes to providing more housing and reducing homelessness. During his State of the North County speech before an audience at the El Corazon Senior Center Desmond said he will "always be a voice and fight for our fair share of resources." Desmond represents District 5, which includes cities like Escondido, Oceanside and San Marcos, Camp Pendleton and dozens of unincorporated communities. (Times of San Diego)
- Violent crime in San Diego County increased in 2021, a report released Tuesday by the San Diego Association of Governments found. The annual report, "42 Years of Crime in the San Diego Region: 1980 through 2021," found homicide, rape and aggravated assault increased 3%, 11% and 12% respectively in 2021. "While the 2021 crime rates are historic lows for our region, violent and property crimes were up last year," SANDAG Senior Director of Data Science Cynthia Burke said. (San Diego Patch)
- TrueCare recently raised more than $300,000 from its Magical Masquerade Grand Gala in support of its healthcare services and programs in North San Diego County and southern Riverside County, the nonprofit announced April 19. The agency has locations throughout North County, including Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas and San Marcos. Gala proceeds will go toward expanding TrueCare's mobile healthcare units, telehealth services and transportation assistance, according to a TrueCare news release. (OsideNews)
