Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- Vista Community Clinic adds a new mobile wellness vehicle to provide more health and wellness services on the road. The unit will feature two exam rooms and offer services such as primary care, preventative breast and cervical cancer screenings, blood pressure screenings and COVID-19 vaccines. The unit will launch in late July or early August and will be out in the field three days a week with stops at community spaces across North County, or at special events planned with local partners. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
- Heritage Barbecue will take over the nearly 10,000 square feet that was vacated by Municipal Taco on Coast Highway in June. The San Juan Capistrano-based Heritage Barbecue & Brewery is set to open by year's end and will offer barbecue, along with craft beers and cocktails. "Our family just moved to Oceanside and we already love it here," said pitmaster and co-owner Daniel Castillo. "The community is home to so many amazing emerging concepts, we felt this would be perfect for the next chapter of Heritage Barbecue." (Times of San Diego)
- Young military men are almost twice as likely to die by suicide as their civilian peers. The suicide crisis among veterans has been well documented. The national suicide rate for active-duty men aged 17 – 25 was roughly 46.1 per 100,000 in 2020, according to data obtained by Voice of San Diego through a Freedom of Information Act request. That's 80 percent higher than the suicide rate for civilian men – 25.6 per 100,000 – in the same age bracket, according to recently released data by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (Voice of San Diego)
- A person was found dead Monday beneath an Interstate 5 overpass in Little Italy, authorities reported. The death in the 500 block of West Grape Street was reported about 11:45 a.m., according to San Diego police. The deceased person's identity and details on the cause of death were not immediately available. (City News Service)
- A rash of 7-Eleven robberies and shootings struck throughout Orange and Riverside counties Monday morning, claiming the lives of at least two people and wounding several others. Authorities suspect the robberies may be connected. A 7-Eleven store clerk was shot and killed in Brea, a second man was shot and killed at a Santa Ana 7-Eleven store, and a Riverside 7-Eleven customer is in grave condition after being shot Monday morning. Two additional people were shot and wounded at a 7-Eleven store in La Habra. The shootings coincide with 7-11 Free-Slurpee Day, the annual day on 7/11 when crowds flock to the store for free Slurpees. (Orange County Patch)
