The student was taken to the principal's office without issue, but refused a search of his bag and ran from the school, Westminster police said in a news release.

The student was detained off campus and, during a search, a loaded firearm was bound in the student's bag, police said.

A check of the weapon later revealed it did not have a serial number, with police identifying the weapon as a "ghost gun," according to the Westminster Police Department.

The student was booked into Orange County Juvenile Hall on weapons-related charges.

His identity was not released.

No further information was immediately available.
